“Although Paulo Guillobel is a champion in jiu-jitsu and in life, he possesses a humble and noble attitude towards his students that is out of this world. Quickly you will understand that Brazilian jiu jitsu is Paulo’s passion. Even quicker it is visible that jiu jitsu is not a business to Paulo but molding character, building discipline, and encouraging confidence is. Not only does Paulo Guillobel give 100% to ALL at his dojo in San Clemente as a teacher but he also does something that is very rare in this business oriented jiu jitsu world. Paulo personally connects with EVERY individual as if they were the only person there. To have a teacher who is concerned with our development not only on the mat but outside in the real world is very comforting. Upon Leaving Paulos academy not only is your jiu jitsu technique strengthened to a world class level but your spirit, mind, and heart will surely be polished to perfection. If you are looking for a true warrior as your teacher Paulo Guillobel brazilian jiu jitsu academy in San Clemente is for you.”
Guillobel Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu San Clemente did great at the 2010 BJJ Nationals Championship, last weekend Sep 25th and 26th. Our academy was represented by 3 of our top martial arts fighters: Blue Belt Jason Hughes, Blue Belt Andre Pretzel, and Brown Belt Ira.
After amazing fights, each one brought home a medal: Jason got first in his division; Andre got 2nd at the Blue Belt Open Master Division, and Ira got 2nd on his Brown Belt division. Jason submitted his opponent and Andre did the same until the Open Division final. Sensei Paulo Guillobel and our entire Jiu Jitsu Team is very proud of them, specially after such a good performance. Parabens!
Since the beginning of the year, our martial artists’ fighters earned more than 60 medals, including Sensei Paulo’s victory at the 2010 BJJ Pan-American.
Who starts to practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu steps into a new and excited world. Little by little, the BJJ practitioner learns the right mindset, the martial art game, and the use and advantages in wearing the uniform (which we call gi).
Sensei Paulo Guillobel brings us in this video awareness in how the uniform improves any martial artist’s performance. Watch it and you’ll see your jacket, pants and belt as your secret weapon and friend.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is very different from many other martial arts. Unlike other martial arts like Karate and Tae Kwon Do, BJJ’s main focus is on grappling and ground fighting. However, surprisingly to many, BJJ has emerged as the elite martial art that has dominated the world of MMA.
In contrast to other Martial Arts that only teach stand up techniques, BJJ teaches how to compete and control your opponent from being on your feet to defeating them on the ground. With statistics showing 90% of fights going to the ground it is obvious that the one that has the best ground skills is going to have a serious advantage. For those that wonder how this affects it’s use as an efficient form of self-defense it is important to remember where it came from. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was specifically developed as a formidable form of self-defense in one of the toughest and most dangerous cities in the world. If it succeeded in becoming the most effect form of self-defense in Rio de Janeiro, you can bet it can help you out when you need it.
As opposed to martial arts like Karate that rely on power and hard strikes to do damage to an opponent, BJJ can be easily used by anyone of any size against a larger and stronger opponent. Jiu-Jitsu focuses on technique and strategy instead of brute strength. It certainly takes a lot more effort and energy to beat down a large opponent than to choke one out or submit them using a joint lock. This makes BJJ a great martial art for men, women, teens and kids alike. The other advantage this form of fighting has over striking arts is that is offers more control in real life situations. While it might sound cool to some, a poorly thrown punch can easily end some one’s life even if it wasn’t your intention. This can have serious consequences even if you were defending yourself. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can still be deadly if needed, but better than that it offers an easy way to take control of an attacker and render them unable to attack until they give up, calm down or help comes along.
Another nice thing is that BJJ training offers full contact, hands on experience. Tae Kwon Do and Karate kicks might look cool, but the majority of class times are spent practicing useless forms that are never going to be used in real life or UFC competitions. Most Tae Kwon Do schools also only offer point sparring which makes practitioners completely ineffective once attacked in the street. Isn’t it wiser to train for the situations you will actually face?
Finally one of the major and most important differences you will find in BJJ schools like Paulo Guillobel’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in California that serves, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente is the dedication to real training and real principals. Unlike so many Karate and Tae Kwon Do schools that have sprung up on every corner that are happy to trade dollars for pretty colored belts, you will find brilliant BJJ academies like this remain true to the philosophies that have made them successful and that have become a complete way of life for those that desire to be true warriors.

Austin Leffel came to Guillobel Brazilian Jiu Jitsu San Clemente Academy a little more than 1 month ago. And it’s impressive to see even in such a short period of time, how our BJJ program impacts all our student’s lives. And Austin’s life isn’t an exception – or/and should I say, our lives isn’t the same?
Every day our jiu-jitsu family is getting stronger and stronger. Austin (and so many others that join in the last month) add to our team in so many good ways, that we are very fortune to be around them. Austin brings to our BJJ classes energy and his big smile to the mat, making it a pleasant environment to train our technical Martial Art. He sent us an e-mail quoting “I must say that you were a more welcoming gym than any other one I went to. I appreciate your warm welcoming and am glad that I found your gym!”
A lot of martial artists get frustrated when training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu because they don’t know how to pass the guard properly – specially if they practice with someone that knows how to use their legs and hips to have a great guard.
But from now on, you will no longer be frustrated when practicing our Martial Art! Sensei Paulo Guillobel, owner of Guillobel Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu San Clemente, and black belt Andre brings to you this week, Sep 20 – Sep 25, one effective way in how to pass the guard. This BJJ technique can be used with the use of gi or without it, like when training MMA or grappling.
Keep in mind that it’s very important to control your opponent’s hips and legs. With proper brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training and a good number of repetitions of this technique, it won’t be hard to be very effective in your BJJ.
Notice: Safety always comes first. It is always better to train under guidance of a professional, like Sensei Guillobel, and in a safe and friendly environment, like Guillobel BJJ Academy. This video intends just to review the technique taught during class.
If you would like to learn more than just passing the guard, please redeem our offer now:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was originally developed from Japanese Judo after Japan sent top martial artist Mitsuyo Maeda across the globe to compete and demonstrate techniques. It was in Rio de Janeiro that Maeda, also known as Count Koma met the Gracie family including Carlos and Helio Gracie who founded Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the early 1900s. However it wasn’t until it began to be exported that it started to be referred to as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Since then BJJ has enveloped the globe and has proven itself in many MMA competitions and has attracted a large following including most of the UFC’s top fighters. You will now find BJJ schools around the world including the Guillobel Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in San Clemente, California. Here you will find incredible instruction under Sensei Paulo Guillobel, who has trained extensively under Jean Jacques Machado, nephew of Carlos Gracie and one of the pioneers of this incredible martial art.
The advantages and benefits of BJJ are undeniable and even the most hardcore stand up fighters in the world have had to incorporate it into their training regimens in order to keep their competitive edge and be able to defend themselves in the octagon. So don’t you think you owe it to yourself to give it a try?
